Afropunk Inspires Brooklyn Students

On August  24th, Citizen Schools 8th Grade Academy students from Urban Assembly Unison had the opportunity to visit the Afropunk festival site to experience how the organization set up for their annual festival in Brooklyn. Students met with the Afropunk Graphic Design, Operations, and Community Outreach staff. Our students were able to ask career and creative design related questions. The staff at Afropunk emphasized the importance of “going for what you want in life and never letting fear control your destiny."

The purpose of the trip is to connect our 8th Grade Academy students to local organizations and different career paths. Afropunk is an influential community of young people of all backgrounds speaking through music, art, film, lifestyle sports, fashion, photography, and more. They are the influencers, creatives, and tastemakers who were once seen as outsiders, but who now directly affect pop culture.
